Map of World Remembrance - events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz

OPEN THE MAP

The 27th of January 2015 will be a very special day. On this date we will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The memory of the whole world will focus on the tragedy of the Shoah  and the cruel system of terror created by Germans in occupied Europe.

The last of the Survivors who are still alive will be with us on that day. For many of them this seventieth anniversary will be the culmination of their personal victory over despair and oblivion. We would like to spend that day with them.

On this special day we would like to show the Survivors and the world that we – the post-war generation – have matured to take up our own responsibility for remembrance. It will be a sign that we are ready to carry with us the memory of the Holocaust of European Jews, as well as the fate of the Poles, the Roma, the Soviet prisoners of war and many other groups of victims.

The main commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz will be held in front of the Death Gate of KL Auschwitz II–Birkenau. On this day – which, for ten years now has been commemorated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day – various anniversary events will be held in many countries: conferences, exhibitions, ceremonies, meetings… It will show that the tragedy of Auschwitz and the memory of its victims lies deep in the hearts of people all over the world.

We would like to show here how enormous the Map of World Remembrance is. We wish to record every event held on the 27th of January to commemorate the Victims, meetings with the Survivors and any event intended to build our shared responsibility for common remembrance.

We would like to invite each and every one to become a co-creator of this unique date – the  27th of January 2015. Let it be a day of remembrance everywhere – at memorial sites and museums, schools and universities, public spaces, culture centers, synagogues and churches.

If you plan to organize an anniversary event (a meeting, an exhibition, a ceremony, a conference etc.), please use this form to send us brief information about it (in English). We hope to show the widest possible array of events planned for 27th January, so we would greatly appreciate it if you could share this invitation to other partner institutions or organizations which, to your knowledge, might be interested in joining our Map of World Remembrance.
